How do I sign-up for EVAP?

Just click on the 'Sign-up' button at the top of the page, and enter your email address. You will receive an email containing a 5-digit one-time passcode. Enter that password in the sign-up page (to authenticate yourself), create your own new password, and create your "screen name" which will make your online/offline status visible to others your EVAP contacts. Note that the "screen name" will also be visible to eToken users that you create.

What are eTokens?

EVAP tokens ('eTokens') are anonymous login codes that you can create and share with people to allow them to video chat with you. They use the eTokens to connect with you rather than your personal phone number or email address.

How do I create eTokens from the EVAP app?

Launch the EVAP app on your smartphone or login to http://evap.io using your browser (PC Chrome or Firefox and MAC Chrome or Safari 11.0.3+) with your username and password. Click the plus sign on the screen to create an eToken. This eToken will be added to your EVAP contact list. Give this eToken to someone as a login (they don't need to sign-up, or provide any personal data) and they can go to Token Login page and enter their EVAP token to video call you.

What are named eTokens?

You have the option of creating a named EVAP tokens ('named eTokens'). For a named eToken, you choose what the eToken login code is that you can then share with people to allow them to video chat with you. They use the named eTokens that you have chosen to connect with you rather than your personal phone number or email address. Additionally, for named eTokens, you can set a profile image that helps you quickly know who is calling. For example, if you are trying to sell a car on Craigslist ™, you could create a named eToken called - mychevyforsale - and attach a profile image of the car to it. Named eTokens have the same anonymous features as regular eTokens. Note that the named eToken must be unique in our system.

How do I share an eToken?

When you create an eToken (including named eTokens), you are prompted whether you want to immediately share the eToken via SMS. Sharing via SMS will allow the recipient to click on the link in the SMS on their mobile device and immediately start a video call with you (note that iOS support is still under development). When you choose 'share', you will be prompted to enter a telephone number (we do not access your address book) and the SMS is sent. Alternatively, select share later and you can choose to share at a later time by clicking on the share icon on the eToken image.

Note that the recipient does not need to create an account or download the EVAP app.

Can I add other EVAP users?

Yes, you can add any EVAP subscriber to your contacts and you can invite other users to become members of EVAP. To add a an existing EVAP user, just go to your EVAP contacts and add the user's email. They will receive a link by email and must simply click on it to accept your invitation.

I was given an eToken, how do I use it?

Click on the login button at the top of the page and enter the eToken or download the EVAP iOS or Android app, enter your eToken and you can immediately start video chatting with the person that issued it. No personal information or sign-up is required from you.

Note that the eToken is the whole eToken. For example, if someone gives you the token 'evap1234567', you need to enter the complete token, including the 'evap' part and not just the digits.

Why can't I login with an eToken?

Check that you entered the complete eToken including any prefix and not just the number. If you still have an issue, check with the person that gave you the eToken as they might have removed it, or the eToken might have expired (they are good for a finite period of time).

Can multiple people use the same eToken at the same time?

Yes, an eToken may be used by multiple users at the same time (the current limit is 5). When another login is made with the same eToken, the oldest eToken login will be automatically logged off.

Can I use an eToken while being logged with my username?

Currently, we do not support this (though it is in process). To use an eToken that someone has given you when you are already logged in using your username, you must log out and log back in with the eToken.

Do I need to download an app?

You can download an app for iOS and Android from the Apple or Google app stores or you can use the Chrome or Firefox browser on your PC or Safari 11.0.3+ or Chrome on a MAC. or Android tablet or Android mobile device.

How long are eTokens good for?

eTokens are valid for a period of 7 days, then they expire. New tokens can be generated at any time. However, if you create a named eToken (these are eTokens that you choose but they must be unique in the system), we currently do not expire these tokens.

How many eTokens can I issue?

You can have up to 6 eTokens at any point. You can delete unneeded eTokens (go to your contact management in settings, select the eToken and click on remove). You can then generate new eTokens at any time.

Can I be logged in on multiple devices?

Yes, we have recently introduced a feature that will allow EVAP subscribers to be logged in from up to 5 devices at the same time. When someone video calls you, each of the devices will ring and you can answer from any device. If you try to log in from another device when you are already logged in from the maximum, you will receive an email with a link to click on to delete the oldest of your logins. Of course, you can log out from one device to log in from another.

Can I add users such as friends using their email address?

Yes, but first you need to send them an EVAP invite. Go to the settings in the EVAP app, click on invite, and they will receive an email with a one-time passcode and a link (e.g., Android/Apple/browser) to become an EVAP subscriber. Once they have signed up for EVAP, you can add them as a member to your group of EVAP contacts. They will then receive an email with a link to click to complete the setup.

Can either party initiate a call?

Yes, either party can initiate a call. The online/offline status of each of your contacts is displayed in the app (greyed image is offline, colored image is online). Video voicemail can be sent to offline users.

How are eTokens private?

There is no personally identifiable information associated with an eToken. It is a simple login token that does not have any corresponding email address or phone number. See our Privacy Policy for further information.

What do we know about eTokens usage?

We do not log any data about who uses the eTokens. Our servers do, however, know that they are used because to make video calls, the eToken pass through our servers. However, neither we nor anyone except the eToken issuer knows who is using them. Our software also knows who an eToken is issued by (i.e., to enable video calls to reach you). After their expiration, all data logs are deleted subject to our data retention policy - see our Privacy Policy.

Can we monitor your communications?

No, we do not have the technical ability to listen in on any of your audio or video content. The content is sent directly between the you and the party that you are communicating with in an encrypted (i.e., end-to-end encryption) format that we do not have the keys for.
